Pupils should bring to school each day:

  • A water bottle with their name on
  • Suitable clothing for the weather to ensure they are comfortable during outdoor break times

Please click here for details of PE kit and school uniform

Homework:

Homework is given out every Friday and is due back the following week. Homework will be focused on the maths unit we are currently learning in class.  Additionally, will receive a SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) task to ensure the children practise frequently to help them build their skills as writers and build their confidence.

Reading:

It is crucial that your child reads as often as possible, preferably with an adult, who can support with understanding of the text, e.g. by asking them questions about what they have read. While the children are now mostly able to read without help, questions will help them develop their comprehension skills.

We have also created Read Theory accounts for all children in Year 6. This is a free online tool to aid children with their reading comprehension: Log in | ReadTheory

Guided Reading:

In reading this half term, we will be reading 'Letters from the lighthouse' by Emma Carroll. We will use this text to complete a variety of tasks, to build comprehension skills.

Letters from the Lighthouse | KS2 | Comprehension | Topic | WW2 | Resources

Maths:

Our Maths curriculum follows the White Rose Maths scheme, which is designed to help children develop a deep understanding of key mathematical concepts.

This half-term, our classes will be continuing to become fluent with the 4 operations and begin to apply these skills to word problems.  After becoming confident with using the 4 operations, we will then move onto fractions.

Science:

This half-term, our Science topic is Electricity. Within this topic the children will:

  • Compare and give reasons for variation in how components function
  • Use recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram
  • Associate the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit
  • Design and construct simple electric circuits for a purpose
  • Know how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches.

Geography

Our Geography topic in Year 6 this half term is called 'Is the World Fair?'. During this topic, we will examine:

    • What fair is and identify aspects of life that are not fair/equal
    • How opportunities are different for different people
    • Why countries are categorised as developed, developing or least developed
    • How countries are different from each other (human and physical characteristics/features)
    • The cause of inequality and unfairness
    • Initiatives for global change and research, propose and justify ideas.

Art:

This half term, Year 6 are studying the influential street artist Banksy and his distinctive graffiti style. Pupils will be exploring how Banksy uses art to convey powerful social and political messages. They will also experiment with chiaroscuro, a technique that uses light and shadow to create dramatic effects, helping them understand how visual elements influence meaning. To conclude the unit, the children will design their own graffiti-inspired artwork, focusing on the theme of war and peace. This project encourages creativity, critical thinking, and the use of art as a tool for expression.

RE:

In RE lessons, we will be studying how Buddhist live a meaningful life through the Kirklees Agreed RE Syllabus.

PSHE:

In PSHE, we use a  scheme called My Happy Mind. In year 6, the children are specifically looking at transitions and how to manage the different emotions that they might be feeling. This half term, the students will be celebrating their character strengths and looking at how they can use them during their transition.

Music:

As musicians, we follow the Charanga music scheme. Our unit this half term focusses on inspirational women working in music. Throughout this series we will explore the concept of 'identity'. The children will then be invited to try out different ways of making their own music, while exploring the work of some of the most influential women in music over the last 100 years

MFL:

This half term, Year 6 are learning how to talk about school subjects in French. Pupils will learn the nouns and definite articles for ten subjects, alongside how to conjugate the verb étudier (“to study”). They will also be introduced to telling the time and will expand their vocabulary for giving opinions. By the end of the unit, children will be able to say which subjects they like and dislike, justify their choices, and explain when they study different subjects. This will enable them to create more detailed and personalised responses in French.
