The School Day:

The gates will open from 8:30am.  The class register will be taken at 8:45am and learning will  begin immediately after this.  It is important that pupils are on time to school so that they do not miss any learning.

Pupils should bring to school each day:

  • A water bottle with their name on
  • Suitable clothing for the weather to ensure they are comfortable during outdoor break times
  • A packed lunch (if required)

Pupils are to be collected from school at 3:15pm.

Homework:

Homework is given out every Friday and is due back the following week. Homework will be focused on the maths unit we are currently learning in class.  Additionally, will receive a SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) task to ensure the children practise frequently to help them build their skills as writers and build their confidence.

Reading:

It is crucial that your child reads as often as possible, preferably with an adult, who can support with understanding of the text, e.g. by asking them questions about what they have read. While the children are now mostly able to read without help, questions will help them develop their comprehension skills.

We have also created Read Theory accounts for all children in Year 6. This is a free online tool to aid children with their reading comprehension: Log in | ReadTheory

English:

This half term in English, our Year 6 pupils are exploring the thought-provoking book Varmints. Inspired by its powerful themes and imagery, the children are crafting their own engaging narratives. They are focusing on developing rich descriptions, building atmosphere and using a range of writing techniques to bring their stories to life. A key focus is using speech effectively to show character and move the narrative forward, alongside embedding a variety of grammatical and literary skills.

Maths:

In Maths this half term, Year 6 are continuing to build their confidence and accuracy by practising key calculations daily to secure their arithmetic skills. They are focusing on the four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—alongside developing a deeper understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. Through regular practice and problem-solving opportunities, pupils are strengthening their fluency and applying their knowledge to a range of mathematical contexts.

Science:

This half-term, we will be looking at Evolution and Inheritance.  At the end of this unit children will be able to:

  • Recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago
  • Recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents
  • Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution

Topic

Our topic in Year 6 this half term is 'Black and British'. During this topic, we will begin to understand:

  • The story of the first Black Britons in Britain
  • The part Black people played in British life when they started to settle over 500 years ago
  • The experiences of black people during the transatlantic slave trade
  • Why the sacrifices of black people during the two world wars has only recently been recognised
  • How the arrival of the Empire Windrush changed the way black people were treated in Briatin
  • How far life has improved for black people living in Britain in the last 60 years

Art:

This half term, Year 6 will be studying the work of David Hockney, exploring his use of colour, line and abstraction. Pupils will investigate abstract art and develop their own creative responses through sketching, experimenting with different techniques and styles. Children will be encouraged to observe carefully, take creative risks and refine their ideas as they develop their own artwork.

RE:

In RE lessons, we will be studying 'Why do some people go on a pilgrimage?'

through the Kirklees Agreed RE Syllabus.

PSHE:

In PSHE, we use a  scheme called My Happy Mind. In year 6, the children are specifically looking at transitions and how to manage the different emotions that they might be feeling. This half term, the students will be looking at a unit called 'Engage'. In this unit, they will be tackling thoughts and feelings about their up and coming transition.

Music:

In Music, Year 6 will be taking part in a six‑week unit that builds on their previous musical learning. The focus of this unit is Benjamin Britten’s Friday Afternoons, with a particular emphasis on the song A New Year Carol. Throughout the unit, pupils will explore the structure and features of the piece, develop their listening and appraisal skills, and build confidence in singing as an ensemble.

MFL:

In this unit pupils will learn 10 phrases for activities they may do at the weekend in the foreign language. They will also be presented with further extension on telling the time and opinions/justifications. Pupils will have the knowledge and skills to talk about what they do at the weekend, enabling them to create more detailed and personalised responses by the end of the unit.
