RSE and Health education
At Brambles Primary Academy, we understand the importance of educating children about sex, relationships and their health, for them to make responsible and well-informed decisions in the lives.
The teaching of RSE and health education can help prepare children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. It allows us to promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental, and physical development of children at school and in the wider society.
We are clear that parents and carers are prime educators for children on many of these matters and the school's role is to provide our pupils with high-quality and age appropriate teaching to support their personal development and pastoral needs.
The RSE and Health education policy outlines how the school's RSE and health education curriculum will be organised and delivered. You can access a copy of this policy via the link below.
Defining Relationships and Sex Education
The DFE guidance defines RSE as “lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the importance of marriage and family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care.
Working with Parents
We believe in effective communication between home and school. If parents have any questions or concerns regarding RSE and health education, they may submit these via email, or contact the school office to arrange a meeting with the Principal.
Right to Withdraw
- Parents have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory RSE.
- Parents do not have a right to withdraw their child from the relationships or health elements of the programmes.
- Requests to withdraw a child from sex education will need to be made in writing to the Principal.
- Sex Education is only taught in Year 6 at Brambles Primary Academy
RSE and Health Education Programmes of Study

At Brambles Primary Academy, we implement the majority of our RSHE curriculum through the myHappymind+ programme. The myHappymind+ programme is aligned with UK statutory guidance for RSE and Health Education, while also incorporating non-statutory PSHE objectives and Early Years Foundation Stage PSED outcomes.
The programme is organised into four core strands:
- myHappymind – developing positive mental health, resilience, and wellbeing
- myHappybody – covering Health and Wellbeing objectives
- myHappyrelationships – addressing relationships objectives
- myHappyworld – exploring themes within Living in the Wider World
Through these strands, students receive a consistent and developmental curriculum that supports their wellbeing, relationships, and personal growth throughout their time at school.
In EYFS, specific focus is given to the PSED curriculum areas of:
- Self-Confidence and Self-Awareness
- Managing Feelings and Behaviour
- Building Relationships
- Health and Self-Care
Changing Me
As myHappymind+ does not include teaching on puberty or sex education, these elements are taught separately through our 'Changing Me' module in the summer term. In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, the focus is on life cycles, valuing our own bodies and learning some vocabulary for the external body parts that we might use if we needed to talk to an adult such as a nurse or a doctor. In years 1 and 2 we introduce scientific terminology for body parts, including genitalia, partly for safeguarding reasons and partly to lay the foundations for learning about puberty later.
In Key stage two, children look more closely at how our bodies grow and develop, how babies grow and develop, and the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty.

To complement the RSE and Health education curriculum at Brambles Primary Academy, we also use Pol-Ed lessons and resources to support children's understanding around four main areas:
- Relationships
- Keeping Safe
- Understanding the Law
- Wellbeing
This programme covers age appropriate interactions with people and situations a child may encounter both in and out of school.
