Phonics

We follow the Little Wandle phonics scheme. A weekly information sheet will be sent home via ClassDojo to inform parents what children have been learning that week. Please support children at home by practicing the phonemes, tricky words and sentences. The images below shows how children are taught to form letters correctly and the sounds they have already learnt.

English

In English, we will be exploring the engaging and imaginative story A River. Through this text, the children will develop their understanding of storytelling and descriptive language. They will learn how to identify key features of a setting and use this knowledge to create their own detailed and creative setting descriptions, focusing on vocabulary that brings their ideas to life for the reader.

Alongside this, pupils will also be studying the poem Jump or Jiggle. They will explore rhythm, rhyme, and performance, learning how poets use language to create fun and engaging effects. The children will have opportunities to perform the poem aloud, build confidence in speaking and listening, and experiment with their own ideas to create simple rhythmic verses.

Throughout these units, we will be focusing on developing key writing skills, including sentence structure, punctuation, and vocabulary. We will encourage children to share their ideas, use their imagination, and take pride in their writing as they grow in confidence as young authors.

 Maths

In Year 1 Maths, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme, which provides a clear and structured approach to learning and supports children in developing a secure understanding of key concepts.

This half term, pupils will be focusing on fractions, geometry, place value within 100, money, and measurement. They will explore numbers in greater depth, developing their understanding of place value and practising counting, comparing, and ordering numbers up to 100.

Throughout the half term, we will encourage children to explain their thinking, use mathematical vocabulary, and build confidence in solving problems both independently and with others.

Science

In Science, we will be learning about Animals, including Humans. This half term, children will explore a variety of domestic and wild animals, developing their understanding of the different environments in which animals live.

Pupils will learn to identify and describe animals based on what they eat, including carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores. They will also begin to recognise similarities and differences between different types of animals, thinking about features such as their appearance, behaviour, and habitats.

Through discussion, practical activities, and observation, children will be encouraged to ask questions, make comparisons, and develop their scientific vocabulary. This unit will help build a strong foundation for understanding the natural world and how living things are connected.

Geography

In Geography, our topic this half term is Brambles at the Beach. Through this exciting unit, children will explore the human and physical features of beaches, learning to identify what makes these environments unique.

Pupils will develop their knowledge of the wider world by looking at continents and oceans, helping them to understand where different places are located. They will also compare Huddersfield to a seaside location, thinking about the similarities and differences between the two, such as landscape, weather, and how people use these environments.

Through discussion, map work, and engaging activities, children will build their geographical vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

  Art

In Art, pupils will be exploring the theme Sculpture and Paper Play: Oceans and Coastlines. This half term, children will develop their creativity by designing and making their own 3D sculptures inspired by the seaside.

They will learn how to shape, roll, fold and manipulate paper to create a range of three-dimensional forms, as well as experimenting with materials such as clay and recyclable objects. Pupils will explore different techniques to build texture, structure and detail within their artwork.

Children will also study the work of artists such as Samantha Stephenson, Courtney Mattison and Robert Bradford, using their ideas as inspiration for their own creations. They will create imaginative pieces including ocean scenes, coral reefs and collaborative sculptures.

Throughout the unit, pupils will be encouraged to plan their ideas, make creative choices, and evaluate their work. They will develop key artistic skills while building confidence in expressing their ideas through 3D art.

RE

For our RE studies we follow the Kirklees Agreed Syllabus.

This half term, children will learn about different beliefs about how the world began. They will listen to and retell creation stories, and begin to understand that people have different ideas about the origins of the world.

Pupils will also explore the importance of caring for the world. They will learn that many religions believe humans have a responsibility to look after the planet, and they will think about how their own actions can make a difference.

Through discussion, stories and creative activities, children will be encouraged to ask questions, share their ideas, and develop respect for different beliefs and perspectives.

PSHE

In PSHE this half term, Year 1 will be focusing on the Engage module from the myHappymind programme. Through this learning, children will develop positive attitudes to learning by understanding how their brain grows and how effort and practice help them improve. They will be encouraged to set simple goals, show resilience when learning feels tricky, and recognise that making mistakes is an important part of learning. The Engage module helps children to build confidence, motivation and a sense of achievement as learners.
