Brambles Primary Academy

Art and Design

Our Intent:

At Brambles Primary Academy we aim to inspire children to be creative. Through a variety of opportunities to explore different types of media, children are able to challenge themselves to reach their own potential within this subject.  We encourage all children to consider themselves as ‘Artists’ and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Our Art framework embraces the aims and beliefs that are based on the National Curriculum.

We aim to ensure that all pupils can:

  • Produce creative work that is subjective to them.
  • Become proficient artists by the end of each key stage through opportunities to draw, paint and use sculpture.
  • Evaluate and gain knowledge about great artists, craft makers and designers.

Our Approach:

At Brambles, every child experiences being an Artist.  These opportunities are embedded into termly learning opportunities. The children make and design work that is shared in their classrooms and is visible throughout the school in engaging displays of learning.Kapow Primary

We follow the ‘Kapow Primary’ scheme of work. Kapow Primary’s Art and design scheme of work supports pupils to meet the National Curriculum's end of key stage attainment targets and has been written to fully cover the National Society for Education in Art and Design’s progression competencies.

The Kapow Art scheme of work is designed with five strands that run throughout. These are:

  • Making skills
  • Formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
  • Knowledge of artists
  • Evaluating

Through Kapow Primary’s Art and design scheme of work, these strands are revisited in every unit. In our Art and design skills and our Formal elements of art units, pupils have the opportunity to learn and practise skills discretely. The knowledge and skills from these units are then applied throughout the other units in the scheme.

We use a ‘combined’ scheme of work with DT to ensure that children are regularly being exposed to both subjects in alternate half terms, allowing them to express their creativity in a variety of media.

Key skills are revisited again and again with increasing complexity in a spiral curriculum model. This allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning.

Our Curriculum Overview (below) shows which of our units cover each of the National Curriculum attainment targets as well as each of the strands.

Our Progression of Skills (below) shows the skills taught within each year group and how these skills develop to ensure that attainment targets are securely met by the end of each key stage.

Kapow Primary’s Art and design curriculum develop pupils’ knowledge and understanding of key artists and art movements through the ‘Every picture tells a story’ units and links to artists through practical work. These units fully scaffold and support essential and age-appropriate sequenced learning.

Lessons are always practical in nature and encourage experimental and exploratory learning with Key Stage 2 pupils using sketchbooks to document their ideas.

Our Impact:

Art is valued and promoted at Brambles, pupils will demonstrate prior skills and knowledge, gathering new skills, techniques and subject knowledge to build upon these pre-existing ideas. Children will be encouraged to reflect on the skills and knowledge learnt throughout the topic and be taught to appreciate the works of other artists in a continuous manner.

Children can describe their art journey including what they’ve enjoyed and the skills and knowledge they are developing using technical terms. Children will develop as artists during their time at school and know that their own art style is important and valued.

We expect children to leave primary school equipped with a range of techniques and the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their Art and design learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond. We expect our children to

  • Produce creative work, exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.
  • Be proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject-specific language.
  • Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art.
  • Meet the end of key-stage expectations outlined in the National Curriculum for Art and design.
