Music
We are proud to be a Music Mark School
Our Intent:
At Brambles Primary Academy we aim to ensure that we provide a high-quality Music education that engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music. Through our teaching, we expect that children's self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement increases from their talent as musicians.
We engage and inspire children to appreciate, compose and perform music exploring different music genres. Our pupils to enjoy a dynamic and wide-ranging music curriculum, to increase their cultural capital.
In line with the curriculum for music and guidance from Ofsted, the music schemes of work provide an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning. Pupils have the opportunity to perform using a variety of musical instruments and are also encouraged to use their voice as instruments.
Pupils learn to:
- Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
- Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations
Our Approach:
Throughout the teaching of Music, we aim for all children to have an appreciation for a music genre. We enable children to use Music as a time to foster their creativity, self – esteem and self-regulation. It is hoped that through well taught and exciting music lessons some children will be inspired to take up further musical enrichment opportunities.
At Brambles, teachers use the musical program Charanga and are able to produce inclusive lessons for all children to access the musical curriculum in a fun and engaging way, further promoting a love of learning. Teachers deliver music following the Charanga programme, designed specifically for the teaching of music in primary schools. Charanga lessons are planned in sequences to provide children with the opportunities to review, remember, deepen and apply their understanding. The elements of music are taught in classroom lessons so that children are able to use some of the language of music to dissect it, and understand how it is made, played, appreciated and analysed. In the classroom children learn how to play the recorder and a variety of percussion instruments. Playing various instruments enables children to use a range of methods to create notes, as well as how to read basic music notation.
Our Impact:
Music enables children to develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to children individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Children are able to enjoy music in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer. Children have the opportunity to discuss and share their own thoughts, opinions and ideas, acknowledging and respecting that these may vary and that this is positive. They can dissect music and comprehend its parts. They can sing and feel a pulse. At Brambles children are provided with opportunities beyond the National Curriculum to further and support their understanding. These include having visitors with a musical talent, visiting concerts and school productions. External interests and talents are also encouraged and showcased in class and assembly.

How you can help at home:
Singing is absolutely key in improving your child’s musicality. Sing along to the radio in the car, sing in the bath, sing your child a lullaby at bedtime! For ideas see ‘Bring the Noise’ and ‘Friday Afternoon Music’ below. Make some time to listen to and enjoy music. You could ask children what instruments they can hear when listening to music. Play them the music you love and don’t forget to dance and sing along (makes washing up go much quicker!).
Music Websites:
BBC’s ‘Bring the Noise’ is a great place to start if you want to find more musical activities.
