Design technology (DT)
Our Intent:
At Brambles Primary Academy, every child experiences being an inventor. In Design and Technology (D.T), we encourage children to explore the world around them and observe ways in which they can design, make and evaluate their own unique creations. We support children in this process by helping them to reflect and discuss ways in which they can improve. As a healthy school, children will also be taught the principles of a healthy, balanced diet. They will use cooking utensils to safely prepare a variety of food dishes in every year group and understand where a range of ingredients are grown across the world.
Our Approach:
As a school, we understand the need to promote in our children their abilities to be resourceful, innovative and enterprising to enable them to be capable citizens of the future. Children are taught that design plays a significant part in our past and in our future and the future of the world. We actively encourage children ‘to have a go’ and practise their skills as engineers. This aims to provide our children with the foundations to design make and create.
We follow the Kapow Design and Technology curriculum that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners. Our Design and Technology scheme ensures a progression of skills. All projects follow the “design, make and evaluate” cycle. To give meaning to the children’s design process, design projects are rooted in real life, using relevant contexts. While making, children are given choices and a range of tools and materials to choose from. In the evaluation stage, the children learn to evaluate their own products against design criteria. Embedded in each of these steps are technical knowledge and vocabulary.
Through our Design and Technology curriculum, we aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage children to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.
Our Impact:
Within design and technology, we strive to prepare children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. We aim to encourage children to become creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. Through the study of design and technology, children combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as of functions and industrial practices. Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in design and technology that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum.

How to help your child at home to become inventors
As inventors, we encourage all of the children at Brambles to explore their creativity and imagination so they can design and make their own products. Have a look at the following websites to encourage your child to do this:
