Intent

At Brambles Primary Academy we have chosen to teach French as our Modern Foreign Language subject. In our teaching of French, we aim to provide a high quality language education that fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. When studying French, the children are given an opening to understanding other cultures. As pupils progress through Key Stage 2 at Brambles Primary Academy they will be given ample opportunities to communicate for practical purposes, deriving from their ability to express their ideas and thoughts in French as well as being able to listen to, understand and respond to a conversation in French.

Implementation

Throughout the teaching of languages, we aim for all children to develop an appreciation for the French language. Through well taught exciting lessons we hope for children to gain an understanding of the language, thus allowing them to speak with confidence, fluency and spontaneity.

Throughout their time in KS2, children are taught following the 'Language Angels' Scheme. This scheme enables us to link French teaching to topic areas where possible alongside discretely taught units. The foreign language learning targets for each year of key stage 2 are broken down into the speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills pupils should have developed by the end of the year. For each year there is then a list of specific classroom topics which teachers can use as deliverable classroom realities to ensure all of the required skills are being developed to the right level and at the right pace.

Impact

As pupils progress through Brambles Primary Academy they will develop their Linguistic Knowledge and Understanding in different Key Areas. Throughout their time at Brambles Academy they will develop skills in the following areas;

Grammar

At the beginning of every year children will complete a short unit on Core Vocabulary and Phonetics, to consolidate their basic understanding of French. The children will show clear evidence of progression throughout the year by being able to use prior knowledge to support their understanding of new language learning.
